Mapping Social Relations

I have created a psychogeographic map that explores my subjective observations of the objective social relations visible in real life but not on a usual map. I was deriving with no plan as I came to the conclusion it was entirely paradoxical to do so. If I wanted to see something specific I would have made sure I did, that's what we humans do. I cannot escape my internal planning completely though, I was very much in dismay of the wealth present in the derive area, Knightsbridge. Of course not wealth alone though, private wealth surrounded by its creators and eventual destroyers, workers. I am fascinated greatly by this relationship that underpins the world as we know it, the social relations between workers and owners. Throughout this project I have attempted to further understand these relations and the way the commodity form abstracts us from the concrete exploitation. I have developed a screen printed japanese bound book to present and communicate my ideas and findings. I made the decision to use a gritty resilient sandpaper in contradiction with a very thin fragile paper called glassine. These materials come to act as a reflection of the social relations where one party is responsible for the toil and the other entirely dependent on this act and its reproduction. Friction occurs between these papers as between workers and owners.
